Pillino

Bio

Giuseppe Donati, aka Pillino, was born in Camogli in 1948 where he spent childhood and adolescence. Camogli, in addition to being a real wonder both for his landscapes and his architecture, is more over a town with a singular artistic vitality, known for being the place where many artists such as Romolo Pergola and Rubaldo Merello lived for many years. For these reasons Pillino had the opportunity to get in touch with painting in a completely natural way, almost by osmosis, and he initially developed his painting style in the wake of the tradition realizing landscapes, portraits, views.

MORE ABOUT

The break with these canonic genres, which the artist describes as violent, takes place in 1985 when, especially thanks to many travels and experiences abroad, Pillino came into contact with other artists and realities starting an intensive and continuous research work. From that moment Pillino starts to look in a different way at subjects familiar to him, uncovering himself especially attracted by the traces of memory in the walls of the houses of Camogli: the wall sums up the history of man, in its cracks you can read drama, emotions  that the plaster absorbs like a sponge. He decides to make the wall the formal and conceptual core of his works, the starting point and the center of his artistic research.

Pillino lives and works in Uscio.

CRITICISM

The theme of a wall surface was used early on in Pillino’s history; seen as a
piece of the wall, similar to an unfinished discussion or an image played out on
the surface.
He prefers to consider his paintings as a work in progress, an expression of a
more profound need that moves from the surface to the interior of the artist,
similar to a phase transition or a change in the state of his system, to that of
an observer amplifying the collective experience, to that of a protagonist of
action, which only the artistic act alone can legitimize.
This is no longer just a rough surface, scratched and etched with ambiguous
messages or graffiti left to posterity. Now, the eye scans the depth of the
crevice causing one to reflect and search for truth beyond the split, inside the
wall into the depths of the being.
This is almost a required journey for an artist that, from the beginning, loved
to search for the raison d’être, of that lifetime that left its sign on the wall, and
perhaps now looking for a new passage in the wall and a new interior force,
not just a surface glance but a gaze beyond and within.
The crack is all about tension, from start to finish as if, a suspended word. The
job of art is about finding once again the voice and its narration of events
hiding from the world behind the false representations codified in common
expressive images and messages from newspapers and such. This is about
starting anew, a possible communication, one that is demystified, where the
role of man is reduced to a simple observer of themes that from his sidereal
distance, remains untouched due to the absence of a real physical contact, a
subject capable of confronting pain and death something afflicting everyone
and thus, definitive in life. The crevice in the wall is an open essay, receptive
to changes and interpretations.
Pillino’s thematic wall follows a cyclical sequence. In the last series of works,
“Split,” and “Crevice” every lucid aspect, likable from a pictorial score leaves
space for a hard and dry opinion with respect to the laceration; the crevice
condenses the result of years of research. It is as if the passage of time
reveals the bare intimate parts, hidden from the artist, that the widening of
the space, as a wound, probes the depths of the soul. His exhibt proposes
going beyond the normal surface of the wall.
In these works, where the color seems to clot in the Caravaggesco light of the
crack, the theme is defined as purely Christian, engine of the transformation as
a profound change in the depths of the soul; man who is carrying out here the
fatal passage between conscience and subconscious, known and unknown, life
and death, fulfilling his descent to the underworld to ascend to the surface,
occurring symbolically through a wall possessed as sacred that at the same
time conceals and shows as a veil, our possible destinies.
The subject of the works in this cycle, not without suggestion and
interpretation, becomes created material, where the traditional surface of the
painting opposes a polysemous surface alight with the intensity of a lamenting
eye that dominates the subject and conforms to the symbolic system of
representation.
The fissure as restrained tension, condenses in the desire of another place that
amounts to a promise as well as, a poetry, an uninterrupted dialog between
earth and sky where the passage of an element to another makes up that
cathartic element, purifying, absolute but also symbol of separation and union
between the earthly life and the spiritual life, the incomprehensible and
representation of the unknown. Facades and surfaces in search of sense, signs,
or traces of a glorious past, of a discordant country, poetic sedimentation,
irregular thicknesses like past lives lived, walls.
